Broken Barley Pongal

Yet another recipe for weight conscious individuals and diabetic people

Ingredients
  • Barley Dalia - 1 cup
It is readily available in the market.See the picture below

 The grains will look like this


  • Moong Dhal - 1/4 cup
  • Water - 4 1/2 cups
  • Salt - 1 1/2  teaspoons
Seasoning
  • Ghee - 2 teaspoons
  • Ginger - little (grated)
  • Pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Jeera - 1/2 teaspoon (Alternatively pepper and jeera can be coarsely broken and used)
  • Curry leaves - few (nicely chopped)
Method

Step 1- Dry roasting
  • Dry roast barley and moong dhal separately.Do it n low flame.
  • Barley will be slightly brown.Switch off the stove at that point

  • Moong dhal will emit nice aroma 
Step 2 - Pressure Cooking
  • Take the above roasted items together and pour water.Place it in a pressure cooker
  • When the steam is released through the vent, open the lid and add salt.Mix well
  • Close the lid and place the weight.Wait for 5 whistles and switch off the stove
  • Once the pressure comes down open the lid
Step 3 - Seasoning


  • In a separate kadai or iron ladle melt ghee
  • Sprinkle hing and put curry leaves and grated ginger
  • Switch off the stove and add jeera and pepper (or coarsely ground powder)
  • After 2 minutes pour it over the cooked pongal and mix well
Barley Pongal s ready.Serve it wth Gothsu
