Bangla Khichadi / Khichuri using Millets

Durga Pooja in Bengal is not complete without this hot khichadis...I have explained the original recipe in this link Bangla Khichudi..I have experimented the same using millets instead of rice which adds more value to it


Ingredients
Part 1 - Dry Roasting
  • Millet (I used Kuthiraivali Arisi) - 1 cup
  • Moong Dhal - 3/4 cup
Part 2 - Seasoning and Vegetables
  • Ghee + Oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Cumin seeds / Jeera - 1 teaspoon
  • Bayleaf - 1 
  • Green chillies - 3 or more
  • Ginger - small piece
  • Tomato - 2 nos (finely chopped)
  • Mixed Vegetables consisting of carrot, peas, potato, beans, cauliflower , pumpkin etc- 2 cups
Part 3 - Spice Powders
  • Turmeric - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Chilly Powder - 1 teaspoon or more
  • Garam masala - 3/4 teaspoon
  • Salt - 2 teaspoons
Part 4 - Others
  • Water - 6 1/2 - 7 cups
Method
Step 1 - Dry Roasting
  • Dry fry moong dhal till the raw smell goes.Take it out and keep it aside
  • Also dry roast millet in the same kadai / pan
Step 2 - Seasoning and Saute
  • Heat oil / ghee in a cooker.Splutter jeera seeds.Saute bayleaf, green chillies and ginger
  • Add chopped tomatoes and saute it with a pinch of salt
  • Put the chopped vegetables and swirl it once
  • Add all spice powders given under "Part 3" and mix well
Step 3 - Khichadi
  • Pour water and boil it.Add dry roasted moong dhal and millet it
  • Pressure cook for 3 whistles
Hot Bangla Khichadi is reday.Serve with shallow fried "Begun Bhaja"
